Zoom USB Fax Modem Review

by Matt Gerchow
I'm working on 2 dissimilar Win XP computers for this job. I use a VoIP telephone line and also a normal telephone line for sending and receiving fax messages. I did not need any special settings.
I'm making use of the windows facsimile tool which forms a part of XP. For your information, I only installed the modem driver and did not install the modem software which is optional which allows calls to be attended to when on the internet.
When I utilized it to get a dial-up connection, it gave me a 44kbps connection immediately... which is really good for my location.
Online fax service like eFax offers the consumer an affodable alternative, instead of having to spend a ton of money on a fax machine.

When I get a call at my office, a pop-up box appears which tells me to click here if I want to answer this call in case it is a fax ( only no information about the person calling appears).. but the faxes are received correctly.
However, there is one drawback... if you have a fax machine that is also an answering machine that has a button that tells you to "push asterisk (*)to send a fax", then, this cant be done that easily.
It is easier if a person takes the call at the fax machine and after that presses the send/receive option to start the fax. This way works well.
One more thing, I thought my DELL 942 would recognize this external device and my AIO would get enabled automatically for fax purposes. This is how it is supposed to work.
However, this has not happened till date. However, I will not stop trying this feature. (My AIO is not able to detect the external modem).
I would like to give you some more information...There are 2 lights which are, OH (meaning Off Hook) and Data ( this button switches on & off as data is sent and received).
The modem does not have a speaker built into it. In order to play the beeping sound, it makes use of the speaker in the computer. Whenever a fax is sent, the operation is performed silently.
A double wire cord for the phone is also included in the box. This external modem which is very compact and easy to handle was very useful when the internal modem had a malfunction.
It just had to be connected to the USB socket, then, the phone line had to be connected and, hey presto, it was all set for the dial up internet. This external modem has proved hassle-free so far.
It sure is much easier and better than installing a fresh internal modem.
