Trendnet USB Fax Modem Review

by Matt Gerchow
A modem is a device that allows some of our commonly used day to day devices to connect with each other. I refer to devices like fax machines, black berries and computers, to name but a few. Such connections occur everyday. Some connections occur via analog phone lines. There are also specific modems that are designed to work along with long distance media. When I say long distance media I refer to devices such as satelittes and DSL. This article will however be focussing primarily on the TFM 56OU fax modem.

As the name suggests, this modem is designed to work with fax machines and services. However, this flexible modem can also work with a personal computer, as well as a desktop machine. It should be noted that this modem is not only a fax modem but is also a renowned data and voice modem. To boot, this modem comes ready to work along with a video phone. One is free to browse the amazon.com web site in order to get more information on the technical specifics of this unique modem.
To use this modem is very simple. After one has installed the CD-ROM drivers, the next step is to plug your modem into any of the USB ports available. You then have the option of installing the software that accompanies the modem or you can install your own. I personally use CA Bitware and I have had no problems. I have found that this software had no problems identifying the modem and installing the appropriate drivers.
Anyway, it should be noted that updated software is readily available online to be used with this modem which, incidentally, has voice capabilities and is much faster than most of the earlier modems. This new and improved modem comes with everything from software to the hardware necessary to connect this device to your computer.
One downside in relation to this modem is that it cannot be used with Mac OSX. It cannot be used with Linux either. The fact is that it can only be used with Windows. Despite this reality, reviews on Amazon confirmed that this device has found favour with buyers. Reviewers noted that at $30.00, this easy to install, light weight and compact modem, is very good value for money. Many reviewers cited the protective cap for the USB connector as being a welcomed feature. Mention was also made of its speed and reliability.
On a personal note, this writer also wishes to add some pros to the list. I personally like the fact that I did not need an extra external power cord after buying this modem. The fact is that this modem has the unique feature of being self-powered when connected to the USB port.
I must however express disappointment at the fact that I could not use this modem with my MacBook Pro. I hope that in time Trendnet will find it fit to come up with Mac OSX drivers that Mac users can utilize. I was also a bit disappointed that Trendnet did not find it fit to make this modem accessible in stores which sell electronic equipment and computer hardware.
